Is My Cat the Right Weight? Why It Matters More Than You Think

When we cuddle our cats, we often focus on their soft purrs, gentle headbutts, and quirky personalities. But one question many cat parents forget to ask is — “Is my cat a healthy weight?”

At FellowKitty, we rescue hundreds of cats and kittens every year — many of them abandoned, starving, and fragile. Weight isn’t just a number; it’s a reflection of a cat’s overall health, energy, and chances at a better life.

What’s a Healthy Cat Weight?

Just like people, every cat is unique — breed, age, and body shape all influence what “healthy” looks like. However, a healthy adult cat typically weighs between 3.5 kg to 4.5 kg, depending on their build.

Here’s a quick checklist:

  • You should be able to feel (but not see) their ribs easily.

  • They should have a visible waistline when viewed from above.

  • The tummy should be tucked up, not sagging or rounded.

Overweight cats can face serious health issues — diabetes, arthritis, liver disease — while underweight cats are more prone to infections, muscle loss, and weakness.

The Reality of Street Cats

Here’s the hard truth: over 90% of the cats and kittens we rescue from the streets are underweight.

Not just a little thin — we’re talking about:

  • Ribs and spine poking out

  • Sunken eyes

  • Weak muscles and trembling limbs

  • Kittens half the size they should be

Many of these babies are days away from organ failure. It breaks our hearts every single time — because all they needed was a little food, basic nutrients, and someone to care.

How You Can Help: It Starts With a Meal

At FellowKitty, we don’t just rescue — we rehabilitate. We give underweight, fragile cats nutritious meals, vitamin supplements, and urgent medical treatment to rebuild their bodies and confidence.

And the truth is — you can be a part of that transformation.

Here's how:

  • Donate a meal – Your contribution can fund high-quality cat food, formula milk, and vitamin boosters.

  • Support medical care – Help provide deworming, antibiotics, and treatments for malnourished kitties.

  • Adopt a rescue – Give a street cat the home, care, and stability they’ve never known.

Every Gram Counts

To us, every gram gained is a win. Every bowl finished is a step closer to life. Every rescued kitten who finally sleeps full is proof that compassion works.

Your kindness can be the reason a trembling kitten finds strength again. Your generosity can be the reason a cat survives.

Let’s not walk past the thin, scared, forgotten cats on our streets. Let’s feed them, heal them, and give them the second chance they deserve.

Donate. Adopt. Share. Be their voice.
Because at FellowKitty, we believe every pawprint matters — no matter how small, how skinny, or how lost.
