Why Do Cats Love Boxes? (And Why We Love Watching Them Do It!)
At FellowKitty, we’ve rescued, sheltered, and loved hundreds of cats — and if there’s one thing they all seem to agree on, it’s this:
Boxes are magic.
Big boxes, small boxes, even boxes far too tiny for them… somehow, cats always find a way to squeeze in, curl up, and claim it like a throne.
But have you ever wondered why our feline friends are so obsessed with cardboard?
Let’s unwrap the mystery (and celebrate one of the cutest cat quirks of all time).
1. Boxes Are Safe Spaces
Many of the cats we rescue come from tough environments — busy streets, abusive homes, or traumatic pasts. For them, safety isn’t just a preference — it’s essential.
A box provides a sense of enclosure, a hidden haven where they feel protected from every direction. It’s like a comforting hug made of cardboard — a place where they can let their guard down and just… be.
For rescued cats, especially, boxes aren’t just toys — they’re therapy.
2. Cats Are Natural Ambush Predators
Inside every sleepy kitty is a tiny jungle hunter. Boxes are the perfect base camp for stalking, hiding, and pouncing — whether it’s on a passing sock, another cat, or your innocent toes.
When we see our FellowKitty rescues jumping out of boxes with wild eyes and fluffy tails, we know they’re not just playing — they’re remembering what it feels like to be strong, fast, and fearless again.
3. Boxes Are Warm & Cozy
Cats prefer temperatures warmer than most humans do — think 30–36°C. A snug cardboard box traps body heat and creates a toasty little cocoon.
For our smaller kittens and fragile rescues, keeping warm can mean the difference between survival and sickness. So don’t underestimate the humble box — it’s basically nature’s cat-approved heater.
4. Boxes Reduce Stress
Studies show that cats provided with hiding spaces (like boxes) show lower stress levels, faster recovery from illness, and even more affectionate behavior.
At FellowKitty’s shelters, we always keep clean boxes in every enclosure. For a stray that’s just been brought in from the chaos of the streets, a box can feel like the first step toward healing.
It’s not just cute. It’s vital.
5. It’s Just Plain Fun
Let’s not forget the obvious: boxes are fun. They crinkle. They collapse. They make noise. They’re tall, short, wide, and weirdly shaped. Every box is a new adventure waiting to be explored.
Watching our rescue cats discover their first box is one of our favorite moments. It’s where fear turns into curiosity… and curiosity turns into joy.
Boxes at FellowKitty: A Symbol of New Beginnings
At FellowKitty, we believe every cat deserves comfort, curiosity, and a space of their own. That’s why we go the extra mile to create enriched environments — from the streets to our shelters, and finally to their forever homes.
So next time you get a delivery or finish a cereal box — don’t toss it just yet. That simple square of cardboard might be exactly what a cat needs to feel at home.
