Why Spaying and Neutering Saves Lives

And Why FellowKitty Stands Firm on It?

At FellowKitty, we rescue countless kittens every year — many of them sick, injured, abandoned, or born into heartbreaking conditions on the streets of Sri Lanka. And while we’re proud to provide shelter, treatment, and love to these voiceless souls, we know that true compassion begins with prevention.

That’s why we’re raising our voice for one of the most powerful, misunderstood, and life-saving decisions any cat guardian or community can make: spaying and neutering.

The Unseen Crisis: When One Becomes Many

Did you know that just one unspayed female cat and her offspring can produce thousands of kittens in just a few short years?

Now imagine this happening across the streets of Colombo, Galle, Kandy, and hundreds of rural towns across Sri Lanka — every alley, every market, every back garden. The result? More mouths than we can feed. More sickness than we can treat. More heartbreak than any animal deserves.

At FellowKitty, we’ve seen it up close: newborns left in drainpipes, pregnant strays limping through traffic, mother cats dying from infection after giving birth in the cold.

We don’t rescue kittens because they’re cute.
We rescue them because there’s no one else to do it.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.

What is Spaying and Neutering?

  • Spaying is the surgical procedure that prevents female cats from becoming pregnant.

  • Neutering is the surgery to prevent male cats from fathering kittens.

These are safe, common procedures performed by veterinarians — and they don’t change your cat’s personality or love for you. They simply stop the cycle of uncontrolled reproduction.

Why We Strongly Advocate for It

At FellowKitty, we integrate spaying and neutering into all our rescue and rehoming work. Here's why:

1. It reduces suffering.

Fewer births mean fewer strays. Fewer strays mean fewer cats living in pain, illness, or abandonment.

2. It protects your cat’s health.

Spaying can prevent uterine infections and cancers. Neutering can reduce aggression and wandering — keeping your cat safer and happier.

3. It helps shelters do more.

We love what we do, but our shelters can only take in so many. Preventing overpopulation gives us space, time, and resources to give each cat the best care possible.

How You Can Help

  • Spay or neuter your pet — even if it’s an indoor cat. It’s a one-time act of responsibility that prevents a lifetime of hardship.

  • Support TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) programs in your area.

  • Donate to help us fund surgeries for strays and community cats who need it most.

A Kinder Future Starts Here

At FellowKitty, we don’t just dream of a better world for cats, we're building it. One rescue at a time. One spay at a time. One supporter like you at a time.

Because love isn’t just about cuddles and treats.
It’s about doing what’s right — even when it’s hard.

Join us in creating a future where fewer kittens are born into suffering, and more cats live safe, healthy, and loved lives.
